On June 12th, 1999, I spent a day out at Fort Wayne Crossing and took pictures of GTW and NS trains (on both the NKP & PRR). This eastbound Grand Trunk train had GTW 5927-5856 and 48 loads of ballast in both GTW & CN orange hoppers, along with this GTW (CN) #6423 on the rear.
The time was 12:30 pm and a westbound NS train on the PRR was waiting at the signal at left, out of photo.

Ft. Wayne Crossing tower sat on the south side (pole line side) and on the other side of the road crossing, approximately 300 feet from the diamond. The Grand Trunk owned 66 2/3% while the NYC&StL owned 33 1/3%. The GT Maintained and operated the tower and billed the NYC&StL 50% and the PFW&C (PRR) maintained the 2 diamonds at their crossing and billed the GT 100%. NYC&StL maintained their crossing at their expense.

I do not know when the tower was removed but it was no earlier than October of 1975.

GTW GP40-2 #6423 was built by EMD as DT&I #423 in November of 1979. Locomotive was last owned by United States Sugar as USSC GP38-2 #406.
