Revisiting Lithia

            Lithia, Virginia - an interesting place to find a vintage signal. This small community is split down the middle by the Norfolk & Western H-Line, now the Norfolk Southern Roanoke District, and still hosts some of the oldest of the N&W CPL signals on this line. Originally installed in 1926, the Lithia CPL signals are really something special. They've been overhauled over the years, but many original components still seem to remain - N&W and now NS sure got their moneys worth with these signals. Modernization is coming though, with PTC antenna eclipsing the old ATCS antenna easily, the signal feels so crowded between antenna and road signs and the trees. Such a different feeling than most anything in the rural midwest.

In my two trips to Virginia, I felt I struggled to capture Lithia properly. Never felt like I got it just right. I'm working on a photo project from this 2023 trip out there today and ran across this photo that I never put up. NS V81, a local out of Roanoke, has just finished working up near Buchanon after having run around their train at Arcadia-Solitude. Now, the duo of SD60Es comes rocketing through the little community of Lithia. It must be strange to live in the home on the right, where looking out your front window presents you with a nearly 100 year old monster of a railroad signal. PLs and CPLs are such beasts, just absurdly massive. Maybe that's why I'm drawn to them.

Many signals I shot in my two trips to this line have been replaced or are imminently facing replacement. Arcadia and Troutville are about to be knocked down based on recent photos I've been sent, and the Altavista line - one I've never made it to but sure wish I had - has even more imminent replacements arriving. Makes me wish I had one last opportunity to get out and there and snap a few more of these tired beasts, but alas. Glad I was able to get what I could, anyway.
