The area around the W A town of Denmark was known by the local Noongar people as Koorabup. meaning 'the place of the black swan', and was the name given to the Denmark River. 

It was thought that Koorabup would almost certainly have become the name of the town if the explorer TB Wilson hadn't  named the river after his naval colleague, Alexander Denmark.

A shame - Koorabuup is a delightful name.
