Pink pelican or white pelican?

            Strangely enough, this bird is called in German ‘Rosapelikan‘ (pink pelican) and in English ‘white pelican‘. In fact, both names are justified. During the mating season, its plumage turns a striking pink colour. This colouring is caused by an oily substance from the brush gland, which is transferred to the plumage during preening. This makes the birds look particularly attractive to their mates. Outside the mating season, the pink colour fades again. In addition, the skin around the eyes of males changes to a yellow-pink colour during the breeding season, while the females turn a strong orange.
