*Opening of Brentwood Institute
Friday, August 30 was a gala day in the history of the picturesque little town of Brentwood. Unique, because in its short life of a quarter of a century it never witnessed such a gathering of people as assembled within the square on the occasion of the above ceremony. Though in the early hours of the morning it looked threatening with heavy banks of clouds, but as the day wore on, the sun shone brightly and nature looked its brightest. Two years had passed away since the building was started and the long-looked for day of opening had at last come.
The arrangements of the committee were commendable in every way. A large marquee having been erected, wherein an excellent repast was provided, and punctually at 4 pm the … [event]commenced and continued for a few hours without intermission, for visitors were arriving from all parts of the central and lower Peninsula. The supply of eatables were inexhaustible, and as quickly as the demand was made as readily was it supplied.
The little hall was packed to overflowing when the hour for the concert arrived. Mr R A Ford occupied the chair and declared |the Institute open.
He said that during a recent visit to Sydney he had got an insight into the working of Institutes. He would suggest the advisability of selecting books suitable to the people, no high class or low class works. Mr J D Mayer also delivered an address, after which a programme songs, instrumental selections and recitations was carried out. During the evening Mr Jordan's graphaphone was heard to advantage.
It was made known that Mr Higgins, late of Minlaton. had presented 50 volumes to the Institute. Vote of thanks were accorded all who assisted in making the day a success. Ref: Pioneer (Yorketown SA) Saturday 18 August 1900.
*On Thursday evening last a concert was given in the Institute hall in connection with the Ellen Thornycroft Fowler Sunbeam Circle, when Uncle Harry, the founder of the Society, gave an interesting account of the work and aims of the Society, and told some of queer fish tales. A variety of selections were also rendered on the gramophone and a recitation "The Wreck of the Schiller." At the close a supper was provided. Ref: Pioneer (Yorketown SA) Saturday 11 May 1901.
*On Friday evening last, April 18, the Institute Hall at Brentwood was taxed to its utmost seating accommodation, when a concert under the auspices Brentwood Rechabite Tent. The chair was occupied by the Rev J D Murphy, in the absence of Mr R A Ford, who said he was pleased to see such large number present. The proceeds were in aid of charitable objects.
The organ used was kindly lent by Mr S Vanstone. Ref: Pioneer (Yorketown SA) Saturday 26 April 1902.
*A meeting of the Brentwood branch of the Liberal Union was held in Brentwood Institute Hall on July 11, and, despite the inclement weather, was well attended. The balance-sheet as presented was very satisfactory. The election of officers resulted as follows:-President, Mr J Boundy (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mr R Anderson and Mr H L Martin: secretary, Mr J J Honner (re-elected): auditors, Messrs G J Martin and G Anderson (re-elected). It is the intention of this branch to hold their annual social shortly. Ref: Advertiser (Adelaide SA) Saturday 18 July 1914.
*Improvement to Brentwood Institute. At a meeting of the Brentwood Institute Committee on May 10th, a move was made towards improving the hall. After discussion, a proposition made by Mrs Rex Boundy and supported by Mr J Alderman was carried, suggesting that the Committee work towards building a new supper room on the north side of the Institute.
A Committee of three was appointed to inquire into costs and to approach the Minlaton Council.
Members of this Committee are Messrs J Boundy (Institute Chairman), J J Honner and H Boundy.
Institute members are confident of whole-hearted support from the people of Brentwood, as most people realise the necessity for a decent supper room, especially the women, who have the most to do with the existing room.
It is hoped that the old room could be made into an up-to-date cloak and smoke room. Ref: Pioneer (Yorketown SA) Friday 21 May 1954.
