            1000x. Formes sanguines du Plasmodium berghei, parasite provoquant le paludisme (ou malaria) chez certains rongeurs.    Les Plasmodium débutent leur cycle en envahissant les cellules du foie, et après cette phase hépatique, ils pénètrent dans les GR (parasites intraérythrocytaires : visibles ici sous forme de petits points mauves dans le cytoplasme ) où ils se multiplient et peuvent se présenter sous diverses formes  (anneau, bague, bande équatoriale...). Le vecteur est la ♀ - qui elle seule est hématophage - d'un moustique du genre Anopheles. 
La malaria présente des symptômes dont la gravité dépend de l'espèce.  Par exemple, Plasmodium falciparum, est responsable des formes les plus graves qui se manifestent par des fièvres très élevées (41- 42°C), des troubles neurologiques avec convulsions, des périodes de coma, des signes de méningite, ainsi qu’une anémie sévère, hémorragies, etc. En 2020, le nombre de décès par paludisme dépassait les 620 000 individus...
P. berghei est un organisme modèle populaire pour l'étude du paludisme chez l’humain.

1000x. Blood forms of Plasmodium berghei, a rodent malaria species. Plasmodium are unicellular eukaryotes and obligate parasites of vertebrates and insects. The life cycles involve development in a blood-feeding insect (♀ of genus Anopheles) host which injects parasites into a vertebrate host during a blood meal. 
Parasites grow within the liver of a vertebrate before entering the bloodstream to infect red blood cells (band- or ring-form). The destruction of red blood cells can result in malaria. 

Plasmodium falciparum is another species which is the most deadly of the human malaria parasites. Its virulence is related to adhesion of infected erythrocytes in microvasculature. Those who contract this form have the higher risk of death. The symptoms  typically develop within 10 to 30 days following the infection, and include severe high fever (105 to 107° F), headache, vomiting, anemia, convulsions and coma ...
The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at more than 620 000 in 2020.
P. berghei is a popular model organism for the study of human malaria.
