Tozal de Mallo, Stunning rock face, Ordesa Monte Perdido National Park, Huesca, Aragon, Spain

The Tozal del Mallo is a peak located in the Pyrenees, in the Ordesa valley, in the municipality of Torla-Ordesa (province of Huesca). The southern spur of the Mondarruego peak, it stands out from the entrance to the valley for its impressive south face despite having a discreet height (2280 meters).

The climb of its south face has been coveted since the middle of the 20th century. The Ollivier guide in its first edition already included an alleged ascent carried out in 1944 by J. A. Gavín and José Luis Rodríguez that turned out to be false.1 The first serious attempt corresponds to J. Santacana who in 1954 managed to reach the great central ledge of the wall, since then called Plaza de Cataluña, through a traverse from the eastern part of the wall.

After a short route opened by J. Gómez and M. Khan in 1955, going along the upper part of the eastern spur, it was Jean Ravier, together with M. Khan himself and three other French companions, who during Easter 1957 achieved the first complete route on the wall. After other minor routes such as the western spur and the complete eastern spur, the next major opening was carried out in 1960 in two non-simultaneous attacks by two different ropes; on the one hand, Josep Manuel Anglada and F. Guillamón accessing the Plaza de Cataluña through the Santacana traverse opened the upper part to the summit and three months later, P. de Bellefon and S. Sarthou opened the lower part from the ground, thus giving rise to the Franco-Spanish route.

In 1963, Alberto Rabadá, Ernesto Navarro and J.J. Díaz managed to open another daring route which they named the Witches' route.

Among the many climbers who have had a notable performance on this wall, opening its various routes, we can mention Raymond Despiau, Miguel Ángel García Gallego and Antonio García Picazo.
