Andre Rieu
Andre Rieu
André Léon Marie Nicolas Rieu (Maastricht, 1 October 1949) is a Dutch violinist and orchestra leader who is well known to the general public through his performances of popular classical works by, among others, Johann Strauss. Although his commercial approach got him a lot of criticism, he has been popular with a wide audience around the world for thirty years. Rieu plays a Stradivarius from 1732.
Biography
Rieu grew up in a musical family. His father, André Rieu sr., Was conductor of the Limburg Symphony Orchestra (LSO), at that time still called Maastrichts Symphonie Orkest. He already let him play the violin from the age of five. From 1968 to 1973 he first visited Liège, then the Maastricht conservatory (where he had lessons from Herman Krebbers, among others), to conclude his studies in 1977 with the "Premier Prix" at the music academy of Brussels. There he developed a predilection for salon music and especially for the waltz. Following the successful Groningsch Salon Orchestra Plush, he founded the Maastricht Salon Orchestra in 1978. Although at that time mainly the elderly had the audience (for whom the music had a nostalgic meaning), his success grew rapidly and in 1987 he extended his ensemble to the Johann Strauß Orchestra.
Rieu has been a knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion since 2002. On 5 March 2009, Rieu was knighted in the French Order of Arts and Literature for the propagation and popularization of classical music throughout the world, particularly in France.
In 2010, Rieu had to cancel gigs scheduled in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand due to a virus infection.
Rieu won seven times the Export Prize (Conamus / Buma).
Johann Strauß Orchestra
His Johann Strauß Orchestra began in 1987 with 12 members, with the first concert on January 1, 1988. As the years progressed, the company grew, which now plays with 80 to 150 musicians.
With his orchestra, Rieu plays around the world: in Europe, North and South America and in Australia. The shows are so big that they can compete with rock performances: in 2008 the tour of Rieu had a replica of the castle of Sissi, at that time the biggest tour set ever.
The great breakthrough came in 1994 with the Second Waltz from the Suite for Variété orchestra by Dmitri Shostakovich, which became an unexpected (hit) success. Since then he travels all over the world with spectacles during which he plays classical music, salon music, operetta, soundtracks and pop music for not only seasoned concertgoers, but also for an audience that did not go to orchestra performances. Following Strauss jr. He leads the orchestra as "Stehgeiger", playing violin.
Despite the worldwide artistic success, Rieu knows financial setbacks. For example, Rieu's company, André Rieu Productions Holding, suffered a million loss in 2008 and instruments and materials had to be pledged to Rabobank. In that bad year, Rieu also had to give his name as collateral to this bank.
2009 was much more successful in terms of ticket sales than the year before. He was in the 6th place of best-selling artists, leaving Britney Spears (7), Metallica (11) and Beyoncé (12) behind him. He achieved a turnover of more than 95.8 million dollars (over 67 million euros) and sold 834.992 tickets worldwide.
He usually performs in the Dutch cities of Amsterdam, Arnhem, Heerenveen and Maastricht. In the last city on the Vrijthof, he has been performing annually since 2005, as a token of appreciation for his home base. In 2014 Rieu traditionally gives his tenth series of concerts at the Vrijthof in Maastricht. The concerts at the Vrijthof take place annually in the month of July. These are released on DVD every autumn.
In 2017 he and his Johann Strauss Orchestra celebrated their 30-year jubilee in 60 cinemas throughout the Netherlands. The concert at the Vrijthof in Maastricht was shown semi-live on 22 and 23 July. Also in 2018 the concert that André Rieu gave at the Vrijthof was shown semi-live in cinemas throughout the Netherlands. The concert was shown that year on 28 and 29 July.
