37099 Merl Evans 1947-2016 leads 6Z20 12.05 Coleham ISU - Barrow Hill, pictured passing Portway (north of Tamworth) and going away from the camera. This was taking Harry Needle's 37405 to Barrow Hill for repairs with the rest of the train bound for the RTC at Derby. 37405 is behind 37099 and Network Rail's 97304 (the former 37217) is on the rear, while the three Network Rail coaches were reported as 6122, 6117 and 9523.

This was timed through Derby at about 2pm, clashing nicely with 37418's return from Toton. However, it had set off from Shrewsbury about an hour late, and I reckoned that I could make it from Long Eaton with a little time to spare. The gen on this working implied that both 37405 and 97304 were on the rear (and also listed the coaches with the BSO leading), but having two locos dead on the rear of the train is, apparently, not permitted. Assuming that there was a loco on the rear, I thought this was the best place to get a picture - Elford and Portway are the first spots where the sun is on the west side of the train, and further north it was far too inline.

The train was delayed a little more around Birmingham, and was 75 minutes late at this point. It then lost more time (due to being looped) and reached Barrow Hill 99 late. Amazingly, after dropping off 37405, the next leg (3Z11 to Derby RTC) set off less than an hour down.

Another reason for coming here was that 37418 had been reported as heading for Exeter, with the saloon Caroline - although it was booked to leave the RTC before 37418 was due back from Toton! I anticipated Caroline to be leading, but thought I might be able to get something more side-on. Needless to say this working was eventually cancelled "due to a problem with the schedule"!
