            Peep this Eresus kollari juvenile female, one of a few recent additions to my collection. 😌

They're found in colonies within burrows of up to 10 cm in depths (1 cm diameter), covered by small shield or funnel-like webbing. Females carry lens-shaped cocoons (8-10 mm diameter, with the capability of holding approximately 65-100 eggs). Hatching juveniles stay in the female's burrow and feed on her after her death.

In the arid habitat of the southeastern Iberian Peninsula a study was conducted to analyze the diet of Eresus kollari. A total of 64 webs with prey remnants were collected in a field site at the Guadix-Baza Basin, and prey were identified to species or the lowest possible taxonomic level, and counted. Prey size was estimated based on remains from the webs and voucher specimens from the study area. In addition, laboratory observations of prey capture were made. The results showed that E. kollari has a broad diet, including prey from a total of 106 taxa. Prey included large arthropods (mostly tenebrionids) as well as relatively small insects (e.g., ants, which constituted a high proportion of prey). -

This species can bite humans. A bite into a finger caused pain, spreading to the axilla, with fever-like symptoms and an increased heart rate. After one hour the patient had partially recovered and after 2 hours the symptoms had alleviated, but a strong headache lasted for one day and the finger remained sensitive for several days.
