"The royal botanist in America to King George III, John Bartram, explored the St. Johns River in 1765. It was John Bartram who gave the lake the name Lake George, in honor of his king."

Many places in Jacksonville are named after Bartram, including schools, roads, neighborhoods and parks.

The St. Johns River is 310 miles long, flowing northward from central Florida, through downtown Jacksonville, and into the Atlantic Ocean.
