Nákladní vlak převážející námi (během našeho pobytu v Chile) pojmenované vozy tzv. „baňky“, které míří k nakládce do dolu San Cristobal v Potosi v Bolívii, z Chilského přístavu v Mejillones na západním pobřeží. Tento vlak musí přejet ze samého západu Chile na východ. Ve vozech se převáží především zinko-stříbrný a olověno-stříbrný koncentrát k exportu do světa.

V povrchovém dole San Cristobal se těží zinko-stříbrný a zinko-olověný koncentrát. Důl vyprodukuje přibližně 1300 metrických tun koncentrátu zinku a stříbra a 300 tun koncentrátu olova a stříbra denně, za rok to dělá přibližně 600 000 vytěžených tun koncentrátů. A i když se nepovažují vytěžené materiály za výrazně kvalitní, jejich těžba probíhá dále. Jedná se tak o jeden z největších dolů Bolívie, celkově na světě se jedná o šestý největší zinečný důl a je třetím největším producentem stříbra. I když se v dole těžilo i dříve, jedná se poměrně o mladý důl, kde se těžba naplno rozjela teprve v posledních letech a s přepravou po železnici do přístavu v Mejillones se začalo v roce 2007 (první vlak 22. září 2007). První zásilka putovala do Japonska a její objem byl 4000 metrických tun bolivijských minerálních koncentrátů.

„Vlečku“ z dolu San Cristobal vybudovala sama firma vlastnící důl. Jedná se o železnici o rozchodu 1 metr, o délce trati 65 km. Na státní trať Uyuni – Ollagüe se napojuje u Río Grande. Pak již po státní trati pokračují vlaky dále na západ k Chilským hranicím přes městečko Julaca, Chiguana a končí v hraniční stanici Avaroa což je přibližně 100 km od výhybny Río Grande. Předání nákladu probíhá až na Chilském území v Ollagüe (cca 4,5km od Avaroa). Ve stanici Avaroa však vlak vyčkává nežli dostane souhlas s vjezdem do Ollagüe a to je povětšinou v době, kdy do Ollagüe dorazil vlak z vnitrozemí Chile.

Mestečko Julaca, jsme měli možnost navštívit, zde krom místního krámku s pivem z kaktusu se doslova zastavil čas. Nás zde zaujala polozbořená stanice a odstavené skříňové vozy. Na závěr překvapila přijíždějící MUVka od Uyuni, kterou jsme zde opravdu nečekali. Nákladních vlaků, které touto stanicí projíždění jsme se nedočkali.
Plná souprava vlaku musí z dolu do přístavu urazit přes 600 kilometrů a vystoupat do nadmořské výšky 4000 metrů nad mořem. Cesta vlaku zabere více než jeden celý den.

Na každém voze jsou naloženy dvě „baňky“ (v překladu kontejnery), ložené 21 tunami koncentrátů stříbra, zinku nebo olova (olověno-stříbrný koncentrát je o něco lehčí a má váhu 17,6 tun v jedné baňce). Tyto kontejnery jsme potkali v dvou barevných kombinacích a to červené nebo bílé. Celkově se za rok převeze více jak 700 tisíc tun koncentrátů.

Po příjezdu vlaku do přístavu Mejillones jsou válcové kontejnery vyloženy v uzavřené budově, odtud jsou koncentráty přepraveny pomocí pásů v uzavřených chodbách do skladovací budovy. Na loď jsou koncentráty transportovány v uzavřeném systému po dopravním pásu dlouhém cca 700metrů, aby se zabránilo znečištění a poškození okolní krajiny a životního prostředí.

Un tren de carga que transportaba lo que (durante nuestra estadía en Chile) llamamos los llamados vagones "frasco" que se dirigía a la carga en la mina San Cristóbal en Potosí, Bolivia desde el puerto chileno de Mejillones en la costa oeste. Este tren debe cruzar desde el extremo oeste de Chile hacia el este. Principalmente, los concentrados de zinc-plata y plomo-plata para exportar al mundo se transportan en vagones.

La mina a cielo abierto San Cristóbal produce concentrados de zinc-plata y zinc-plomo. La "esclusa" de la mina San Cristóbal fue construida por la propia empresa propietaria de la mina. Se trata de una vía férrea de 1 metro de ancho con una longitud de vía de 65 km. Se conecta con el límite estatal Uyuni-Ollagüe en Río Grande. Luego, ya en la línea estatal, los trenes continúan más hacia el oeste hasta la frontera con Chile por la localidad de Julaca, Chiguana y terminan en la estación fronteriza Avaroa, que se encuentra aproximadamente a 100 km del desvío Río Grande. La entrega de la carga se realiza en el territorio de Chile en Ollagüe (aprox. 4,5 km de Avaroa). En la estación de Avaroa, sin embargo, el tren espera hasta que recibe la aprobación para ingresar a Ollagüe, y esto suele ser en el momento en que un tren del interior de Chile ha llegado a Ollagüe.

Tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar el pequeño pueblo de Julaca, aquí, aparte de la tienda local con cerveza de nopal, el tiempo literalmente se detuvo. Aquí nos atrajo la estación medio demolida y los furgones estacionados. Al final, nos sorprendió el MUVka que llegaba de Uyuni, lo que realmente no esperábamos aquí. No vimos los trenes de carga pasando por esta estación.
Un tren completo debe recorrer más de 600 kilómetros desde la mina hasta el puerto y ascender hasta una altitud de 4.000 metros sobre el nivel del mar. El viaje en tren dura más de un día completo.

Cada automóvil está cargado con dos "frascos" (traducidos como contenedores), cargados con 21 toneladas de concentrados de plata, zinc o plomo (el concentrado de plomo y plata es un poco más liviano y pesa 17,6 toneladas en un frasco). Encontramos estos envases en dos combinaciones de colores, rojo o blanco. En total, se transportan anualmente más de 700.000 toneladas de concentrados.

Una vez que el tren llega al puerto de Mejillones, los contenedores cilíndricos se descargan en un edificio cerrado, desde donde se transportan los concentrados mediante fajas en pasillos cerrados hasta el edificio de almacenamiento. Los concentrados se transportan al barco en un sistema cerrado a lo largo de una cinta transportadora de aproximadamente 700 metros de largo para evitar daños al paisaje y al medio ambiente.

A freight train carrying what we (during our stay in Chile) named the so-called "flask" cars heading for loading at the San Cristobal mine in Potosi, Bolivia from the Chilean port of Mejillones on the west coast. This train must cross from the very west of Chile to the east. Mainly zinc-silver and lead-silver concentrate for export to the world are transported in wagons.

The San Cristobal open pit mine produces zinc-silver and zinc-lead concentrate. The mine produces approximately 1,300 metric tons of zinc-silver concentrate and 300 metric tons of lead-silver concentrate per day, making it approximately 600,000 tons of concentrate mined per year. And even if the extracted materials are not considered to be of significant quality, their extraction continues. It is thus one of the largest mines in Bolivia, overall the sixth largest zinc mine in the world and the third largest producer of silver. Although the mine has been mined before, it is a relatively young mine, where mining has only taken off in full swing in recent years and rail transport to the port of Mejillones began in 2007 (first train on 22 September 2007). The first shipment went to Japan and its volume was 4,000 metric tons of Bolivian mineral concentrates.

The "sluice" from the San Cristobal mine was built by the company owning the mine itself. It is a 1 meter gauge railway with a track length of 65 km. It connects to the Uyuni-Ollagüe state line at Río Grande. Then, already on the state line, the trains continue further west to the Chilean border through the town of Julaca, Chiguana and end at the border station Avaroa, which is approximately 100 km from the Río Grande turnout. At Avaroa station, however, the train waits until it receives approval to enter Ollagüe, and this is usually at the time when a train from the interior of Chile has arrived at Ollagüe.

We had the opportunity to visit the small town of Julaca, here, apart from the local shop with cactus beer, time literally stopped. Here we were attracted by the half-demolished station and parked boxcars. At the end, the arriving MUVka from Uyuni surprised us, which we really did not expect here. We did not see the freight trains passing through this station.
A full train set must travel over 600 kilometers from the mine to the port and climb to an altitude of 4,000 meters above sea level. The train journey takes more than one full day.

Each car is loaded with two "flasks" (translated as containers), loaded with 21 tons of silver, zinc or lead concentrates (lead-silver concentrate is slightly lighter and weighs 17.6 tons in one flask). We found these containers in two color combinations, red or white. In total, more than 700,000 tons of concentrates are transported annually.

After the train arrives at the port of Mejillones, the cylindrical containers are unloaded in a closed building, from where the concentrates are transported by means of belts in closed corridors to the storage building. The concentrates are transported to the ship in a closed system along a conveyor belt approximately 700 meters long to prevent damage to the landscape and the environment.
