Mercer Williams House - a photo on Flickriver

Mercer Williams House

            I’ve photographed the Mercer Williams house numerous times.  It’s located on Monterrey Square in the historic district of Savannah, GA.  My fascination with it comes from two sources.  It was built in 1868 by General Hugh Mercer, great-grandfather of the American songwriter Johnny Mercer.  In 1981, then-owner Jim Williams shot and killed his employee and lover Danny Hansford.  (Appropriately, Monterrey square is said to be frequented by ghosts.)

The Williams/Hansford story is told in the novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, by John Berendt.  Williams was tried for murder four times (convicted, overturned on appeal; convicted, again overturned; mistrial; acquitted).  Interestingly, Williams’ defense in the second trial was led by Sonny Seiler, owner of a succession of bulldogs named Uga, mascots of the University of Georgia football team.  Seiler played a judge in the movie version of the Berendt book.

I wanted this photo to be a little strange, so I intentionally kept some inharmonious angles and processed in high-contrast monochrome.
