Sammuramat was a successful regent-queen of ancient Assyria. For five years, until the adulthood of her son, she ruled, becoming the only Assyrian woman known to have participated in a military campaign. This unique status led her to become a legendary figure in later Arabo-European folktales as the character Semiramis. In the Middle Ages of Europe, Semiramis would often be included in lists of female "notables" or "worthies" to be emulated by the European warrior class.

The Millefleurs style of this tapestry, in which the background is a dense field of vegetation, was popular both for its conspicuous consumption, as well as for its ability to display the virtuoso embroidery skills of its makers.
