This is a photo of a World War 2 Pillbox bunker which was used as an Atlantic observation point in south County Donegal. In 1941 the Irish Government signed an agreement which created a flight zone for the British Royal Air Force to fly from Lough Erne in Fermanagh, across to the Atlantic coast, over a small area of County Donegal. This fly zone stretched approximately 4 miles between Beleek in Northern Ireland to Ballyshannon in the Irish Free State, and became known as the 'Donegal Corridor '. The flight zone afforded significant protection to North Atlantic Allied shipping. This agreement was extremely controversial as it contravened Irish ‘neutrally’, and was therefore not publicised at the time. The official explanation for the flights was recorded as ‘Air/Sea rescue.
This bunker is one of 2 which remain on the beach, and would have been initially located on a sand dune bank which has since eroded.
