Ferrovías Train № 3073, the 17:10 service from Retiro to Cuidad Grand Bourg, is seen heading away from Villa Adelina towards Boulogne. Motive power is provided by G22CU loco № E712. The graffiti on the right supports the Union for the Homeland (Unión por la Patria) coalition presidential candidate, current Economy Minister, Sergio Massa.

I could claim that this photo is a metaphor for Massa’s presidential campaign, with the ‘train’ of Argentinian voters leaving him behind, but that would be an entirely retroactive claim. In fact, at the time of taking the photo, my guess (as a probably-naïve foreigner in the country for the first time) was that he would win the presidency, despite the consensus of political commentary that I had been reading (mostly from the English-language Buenos Aires Times) being that he would not win. Massa defied the pundits’ expectations and won the largest share of the vote (36.78%) in the first round on 22 October, but went on to comprehensively lose the second round on 19 November to radical right-wing candidate, Javier Milei, by 55.65% to 44.35%.

El tren Ferrovías № 3073, el servicio de las 17:10 de Retiro a Cuidad Grand Bourg, se ve alejándose de Villa Adelina hacia Boulogne. La fuerza motriz la proporciona la locomotora G22CU № E712. El grafiti de la derecha apoya al candidato presidencial de la coalición Unión por la Patria (UxP), el actual Ministro de Economía, Sergio Massa.

Podría afirmar que esta foto es una metáfora de la campaña presidencial de Massa, con el “tren” de votantes argentinos dejándolo atrás, pero eso sería una afirmación totalmente retroactiva. De hecho, en el momento de tomar la foto, mi suposición (como un extranjero probablemente ingenuo, en el país por primera vez) era que ganaría la presidencia, a pesar del consenso de los comentarios políticos que había estado leyendo (en su mayoría del Buenos Aires Times en inglés) siendo que no ganaría. Massa desafió las expectativas de los expertos y obtuvo la mayor proporción de votos (36,78%) en la primera vuelta el 22 de octubre, pero perdió ampliamente la segunda vuelta el 19 de noviembre frente al candidato de derecha radical, Javier Milei, por 55,65% al 44,35%.
