'Big Jim' and his Euclid TS-14 Earth-scraper - 1959

            Big Jim was one of the Euclid earth-scraper drivers I met early in summer 1959, he appears with some of the other drivers in the other photographs I took at the time. In fact it was 'Big Jim' who encouraged me to photograph the men at their place of work. For which they gave me good  pocket money! I did all the processing at home and was thus able to offer them their photos sometimes the following day!

The negatives have lain 'unseen' for 60 years, now with the aid of modern technology I am pleased to re-offer these historic memories to the broader community.

The Lancaster By-Pass, now part of the M6, was one of the earliest sections of motorway to be constructed in Britain. Work began following on from the Preston By-Pass (M6) and the M1. The new 2 lane each way road was 11.5 miles long, between Hampson Green, just south of Galgate to Carnforth Level north of Lancaster, both accessed from the old A6 highway.
