Les Dhobi-Wallahs

            Mumbai (Inde) - Historiquement, ces blanchisseurs étaient chargés de laver les uniformes des troupes coloniales. Une corporation que l’on retrouve un peu partout dans le pays, et même au Bangladesh. J’en ai croisé à Fort-Cochin ou à Varanasi. Quand l’Inde accéde à l’indépendance, les Dhobi-Wallahs s’emparent de cet outil de travail et se mettent à leur compte, s’organisant en coopératives. 
Au fil du temps ils ont mécanisé leur production en s’équipant de machines à laver électriques professionnelles. Des équipements partiellement financés par les fabricants de textiles qui confient leurs productions à peine sortie de l’usine, afin que les Dhobi-Wallahs les lavent, les sèchent et les repassent, avant qu’elles ne soient conditionnées pour l’exportation.
Pourtant aujourd’hui encore, l’essentiel de la « lessive » se fait toujours manuellement, dans des bacs en ciment.
Pour cette photo, je suis monté sur le bord d’un bassin en faisant bien attention de ne pas chuter, car le béton ciré est extrêmement glissant quand il est mouillé. Même perché et visible de tous, les Dhobi-Wallahs ne faisaient plus attention à moi. Sauf le jeune homme à l’arrière plan sur la droite. J’avais remarqué sa présence, mais je n’avais pas réalisé qu’il m’observait. J’étais trop concentré à gérer mon cadre et surtout sur mon équilibre.

Mumbai (India) - Historically, these laundresses were responsible for washing the uniforms of colonial troops. A corporation that can be found all over the country, and even in Bangladesh. I came across some in Fort-Cochin or Varanasi. When India gained independence, the Dhobi-Wallahs seized this working tool and set up on their own, organizing themselves into cooperatives.
Over time, they mechanized their production by equipping themselves with professional electric washing machines. Equipment partially financed by textile manufacturers who entrust their productions as soon as they leave the factory, so that the Dhobi-Wallahs wash, dry and iron them, before they are packaged for export.
Yet even today, most of the laundry is still done manually, in cement bins.
For this photo, I climbed on the edge of a bowl, being careful not to fall, because the polished concrete is extremely slippery when wet. Even perched and visible to everyone, the Dhobi-Wallahs no longer paid attention to me. Except the young man in the background on the right. I had noticed his presence, but hadn't realized he was watching me. I was too focused on managing my frame and my balance.
