Les terrassiers de tous les dangers - a photo on Flickriver

            Mandvi (Inde) - La coque de ce boutre est terminée. Le navire va être déplacé vers le chenal pour terminer les aménagements de la passerelle de commandement et les cabines des marins. La place sera alors libérée pour la construction d’une nouvelle unité à même le sol.
Pour déplacer un tel monstre de bois, des hommes et des femmes équipés de pelles et de pioches, creusent des tranchés pour désensabler la coque, qui permettront à la marée de la mettre à flots. 
Sur la photo, on voit les terrassiers transporter des sacs de sables qui serviront à caler la coque afin qu’elle ne bascule pas sur le côté, quand les derniers mètres cubes de sable seront retirés sous le bateau. Quand cette béquille de sacs sera en place, il suffira d’attendre que l’eau monte progressivement, entourant le navire pour que des remorqueurs puissent le tracter. 
Comme ce boutre se trouve au plus près de la ville (je suis sur la route pour prendre la photo), cette manoeuvre n’est possible que les jours de grandes marées pour disposer d’un tirant d’eau suffisant permettant à la coque de flotter.
Les travail de ces terrassiers est particulièrement dangereux car le sol de sable n’est pas stable surtout sous une telle masse. Ils risquent à tout moment de mourrir écraser sous une coque qui chavire. De tels accidents arrivent parfois, mais les ouvriers ne semblent pas s’en inquiéter. Côtoyer la mort fait partie du job. Quand on sait qu’ils sont payés deux euros par jour… C’est sans doute le fait de croire en la réincarnation qui leur donne la force de la résilience.

The diggers of all dangers

Mandvi (India) - The hull of this dhow is finished. The ship will be moved to the entrance of the channel to complete the fittings of the command bridge and the sailors' cabins. The space will thus be freed up for the construction of a new unit on the ground.
To move such a wooden monster, men and women equipped only with shovels and pickaxes, dig trenches to remove sand from the hull to allow the tide to float it.
In the photo, we see the diggers carrying bags of sand which will be used to wedge the hull so that it does not tip over on its side, when the last cubic meters of sand are removed from under the boat. When this crutch of bags is in place, it will be enough to wait for the tide to surround the ship so that tugs can tow it.
As this dhow is closest to the city (I am on the road to take this photo), this maneuver is only possible on high tide days to have sufficient draft allowing the hull to float.
The work of the laborers-diggers is particularly dangerous because the sandy soil is not stable, especially under such a mass. They risk at any time dying crushed under a capsizing hull. Such accidents sometimes happen, but the workers do not seem to worry about them. To deal with death is part of the job. When you know that they are paid two euros a day...
