L’adieu aux zébus - a photo on Flickriver

            Ambositra (Madagascar) - A la « Tuerie municipale », il y a moins d’agitation que sur les précédentes photos, en ce matin brumeux. Cette scène a été prise deux ans plus tard, lorsque je suis revenu à Ambositra pour la troisième fois. Un an plus tôt je m’étais abstenu de m’aventurer jusqu’ici. Je n’avais pas envisagé de compléter cette série. 
Comme l’an dernier ma balade photographique matinale m’a mené, plus ou moins consciemment, à proximité de l’abattoir, j’ai poursuivi mon chemin jusqu’à l’entrée de l’établissement de mise à mort. Par curiosité morbide sans doute. L’endroit était plus propre et les murs des bâtiments avaient été fraîchement repeints. Les « tueurs » n’avaient pas gagné en empathie vis à vis de leurs victimes. J’ai pris quelques photos de cette scène sous plusieurs angles, jusqu’au moment ou un gardien sorti de nul part est venu me virer des lieux. J’ai protesté pour la forme, mais je n’ai pas insisté, ne tenant pas à assister à l’égorgement de ces deux zébus. Surtout celui qui est au premier plan. Etrangement calme, il m’a regardé d’un œil résigné, semblant exprimer sa conscience de ce qui allait lui arriver.
Je suis reparti démoralisé au son des cris des cochons que l’on égorgeait à l’extérieur de l’abattoir. 
Je vais probablement retourner à Madagascar, début 2024. Malgré ma répulsion, je ne peux par garantir que je n’y retournerai pas. Il faut parfois affronter certaines réalités et s’extraire du monde aseptisé dans lequel nous vivons. Un monde pas si différent qu’ailleurs, mais dans lequel tout est dissimulé. J’ai le sentiment que la fréquentation de ce lieu agit sur moi comme une psychothérapie, m’obligeant à dépasser mes limites.


Farewell to the zebus

Ambositra (Madagascar) - There is less commotion in this slaughterhouse than in the previous photos. This scene was photographed two years later, when I returned to Ambositra for the third time. A year earlier I had refrained from venturing here. I hadn't considered completing this series.
As my morning photographic walk led me, more or less consciously, near the slaughterhouse, I continued my way to the entrance to the killing establishment. Out of morbid curiosity, no doubt. The place was cleaner and the walls of the buildings had been freshly painted. I took a few photos of this scene from several angles, until a guard came to kick me out of the place. I protested perfunctorily, but I did not insist, not wanting to witness the slaughter of these two zebus. Especially the one in the foreground. Strangely calm, he looked at me with a resigned eye, expressing his awareness of what was going to happen to him.
I left demoralized to the sound of the cries of the pigs being slaughtered outside the slaughterhouse. I will probably return to Madagascar at the beginning of 2024. Despite my repulsion, I cannot guarantee that I will not return there because sometimes we have to face certain realities and extract ourselves from the sanitized world in which we live. A world not so different from anywhere else, but in which everything is hidden.
