August Schmiegel, miner, (1.8.1888 in Angerburg, East Prussia), with his only child, August Johann Schmiegel (22.1.1915 in Altenessen, Ruhr area). August married Katharina Cappa from Spittel (Lotharingia) on 4.8.1914 and divorced her on 4.8.1920. They likely married because Katharina was pregnant – but the looming crisis may have made them marry faster…
August was one of my great-grandfathers and August (Johann) was my maternal grandfather.
August obviously was one of those ca. 100.000 young Ruhr miners who were drafted at the start of WW1. He was an enlisted man („Füsilier“) in 10th company of Kaiser Alexander Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 1 („Alexandriner“). He survived the war although he was wounded 3 times according to the Verlustlisten (fall of 1914, summer of 1915, fall of 1916). This is his only surviving picture.
