1936 Bedford WTL Two-Ton Dropside Lorry DKN 544

The 1936 Bedford WTL was a 2-ton dropside lorry with a six-cylinder 26.3 hp engine and a 3.99 meter wheelbase. It was one of the first models produced by Bedford, a British manufacturer of commercial vehicles. The WTL could be used for various purposes, such as transporting goods, materials or livestock. One example of a WTL lorry is DKN 544, which belonged to Bernard J. Newman, a sand and cement supplier from Faygate. This lorry can be seen at the Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre, a former chalk quarry and lime kiln in West Sussex.

Bedford introduced the 3 ton WT series in November 1933. Again, a short wheelbase WHT (2.82 m), or long wheelbase WLG (3.99 m)) version was offered. A change in design of the WLG produced the WTL, with its cab, internal combustion engine and radiator moved forward to allow a 4.3 m bodylength. In 1935, the WTB bus version appeared, and the WS and VYC models were updated – the latter being redesignated BYC as it was fitted with the engine and synchromesh gearbox of the Big Six Vauxhall cars. The 0.25-0.3 ton HC light van was introduced in 1938, based on the Vauxhall Ten car, and the WT and WS acquired a newly styled grill.

Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre is a family-friendly attraction located in West Sussex, England. It covers 15 hectares of land and showcases the industrial history of the South East region. Visitors can explore over 40 exhibits, including a working print shop, a railway station, a bus garage, a pottery workshop, and more. The museum also hosts various special events throughout the year, such as steam shows, car shows, nature festivals, and Halloween evenings. The museum was founded in 1978 by the Southern Industrial History Centre Trust and has previously been known as the Amberley Working Museum, Amberley Chalk Pits Museum, and Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre. It is located within historic chalk quarries. Chalk was extracted and processed for lime on site for more than 100 years, and the museum still houses a number of its original lime kilns. In addition, holdings and exhibitions at the museum cover a diversity of industrial and local heritage collections, including narrow gauge railways, local bus services, and a multitude of light and rural industrial subjects.

The trees here look oddly bare for October. The leaves were stripped during the great storm of 1987. The storm was a devastating event that affected the UK, France, and the Channel Islands on the night of 15–16 October. It was caused by a violent extratropical cyclone that originated in the Bay of Biscay and moved northeast with hurricane-force winds. The storm killed 18 people, damaged many buildings and boats, and uprooted about 15 million trees. The storm also disrupted transport, communication, and power supply in many areas. The storm was not well predicted by the weather models and caught many people by surprise. It was one of the worst storms in UK history and led to improvements in weather forecasting and emergency response.
