The exquisite details and proportions of County Hall Abingdon, Oxfordshire

            The hall was built 1678–83 and was most likely designed by the Oxfordshire-born stonemason Christopher Kempster, who trained with Sir Christopher Wren on St Paul's Cathedral. I suspect the limestone arrived by barge on the river Thames from the quarries of the Cotswolds further upstream.
This must have been an extremely expensive building, especially for such a small town.
It still dominates the centre of Abingdon, it's style and size making it as unexpected as an alien spaceship towering above the modest brick and timber houses of the town. (well, perhaps not quite as unexpected as a spaceship!)
