The Bell Tower of Evesham Abbey, Worcestershire.

            The small market town of Evesham stands largely within a great meander of the River Avon, downstream of Stratford. It was once dominated by its huge abbey, in its heyday perhaps the third largest in England. Today only a few, mainly auxiliary buildings survive apart from this great bell tower, built around 1530 by Abbot Lichfield. 
110 feet high (34m), it is built in a very late Perpendicular style and stands on the boundary of the abbey precincts with a gateway below it into the town. Beyond it is one of the town's two parish churches.

Within a few years of the Bell Tower being built, history had moved on. Cardinal Wolsey was already out of favour and a sea change in English religion underway. In 1534 the Dissolution of the Monasteries began. There was an attempt to save the abbey and repurpose it as a college, but the petition failed and in 1540 the Abbey was handed over to the King to be plundered and raised to the ground. 
The tower survived due to its great bell, and was given to the townspeople by Mary l.
