Smooth Spangle - Neuroterus albipes

Smooth Spangle gall (2.5mm diameter) caused by the gall wasp species Neuroterus albipes -
on underside of Pedunculate oak leaf (aka English oak) - Quercus robur, in High Halden churchyard, Kent.

A female gall-causer wasp (i.e. a wasp of the family Cynipidae) lays her egg in the tissue of the host plant, inducing the plant to form the gall in which the egg hatches to a larva. The larva feeds on the tissue of the gall while developing into a wasp.
When ready to fly the wasp drills a small round hole in the gall through which it emerges.
