08581 Cardiff 10.8.76 - a photo on Flickriver

            Class 08 number 08581 shunting Parcels vans at the west end of Cardiff Central station on 10th August, 1976.
The water tower behind the shunter was built in 1932 and was used to provide water to the steam engines operating on the Great Western Railway. It was painted in brown and beige, the livery colours of the GWR. The tower became a Grade II listed building in 1998.
The blue and white chequered facade in the background was the Wales Empire Pool opened in 1958 and it was a centrepiece for the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. It was demolished in 1998 as part of the Millennium Stadium construction project.
