Wonders of the Great Dunes, Part 1: A Splash of Autumn Color | Warren Dunes State Park, Michigan, USA

            Looking northeastward from the park's beach parking lot.

The trees with lovely golden foliage are young Eastern Cottonwoods (Populus deltoides). Behind them looms the vegetated crest of the large dune known as Mount Randall. 

 While Eastern Cottonwoods are most often found by Midwestern streamcourses, they're also commonly seen inhabiting sandy sites on the Lake Michigan shore, where their aggressive roots can easily reach the shallow water table.
