The Glory of Regional Silurian Dolostone, Part 31: Detail of the Auditorium Building, Joliet, Illinois (1891)

We're somewhat closer than we were in the Part 30 photo., but we're still centered on the southwestern cupola and adjoining elevations.

It was the great Beat poet's greatest and wisest line. And what better place to bathe in the power of liberation from hopes, expectations, and social conventions than this particular corner? Life goes by, under the glow of golden stone.

And that stone, excepting the small polished columns that seem to be Scottish Aberdeenshire Granite, is the locally quarried Lemont-Joliet Dolostone (LJD). Almost certainly it was taken from the Sugar Run Formation, though there's a slight chance it might have come instead from the Romeo Member of the underlying Joliet Formation. Both units, when used architecturally, characteristically weather to this warm tone. This is shown to best advantage on rock-faced ashlar, as here.

When fresh from the work face, this rock type is usually a faintly bluish- or greenish-gray color, thanks to iron impurities in their ferrous form. But when exposed to the atmosphere's free oxygen and water, those compounds are changed to their ferric state, as goethite. This mineral, named for another notable poet (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe) produces the buttery yellows and ochers that make the LJD so distinctive.
