Bald Eagle (haliaeetus leucocephalus) catching fish

            I was watching about 50-75 American bald eagles fish over the Wisconsin River this past week. It was frigid cold, my fingers were frozen and the eagles were quite far away. Regardless, there was something so powerful and breathtaking. Something so elegant and graceful. Something unconfined and magical. Nature is amazing and gives you wonder if you look.

Mostly small shad was caught by the eagles that morning and transferred successfully from their talons to their beak while flying. With one gulp the fish had been swallowed. I witnessed a juvenile bald eagle catching something bigger that kept on pulling him deeper into the cold water. After a long struggle, the eagle had no choice but let go.
