Hairy Woodpecker (Dryobates villosus) - male

Hairy Woodpeckers have similar black and white woodpecker look than the Downy woodpeckers. There are few key differences though. Hairy woodpeckers have a longer bill, their white outer tail feathers are unmarked (versus spotted on Downy woodpeckers) and they are medium sized birds whereas Downy's are the smallest woodpeckers in North America. Good comparison that has also helped me is that the Downy woodpecker is about the size of a house sparrow and Hairy woodpecker looks like American robin size wise!
By observing these birds, I also think Hairy woodpeckers come across as rough, authoritarian and tough while little Downy's behavior is more so cute.

On this photo you can also see how male Hairy’s red patch is often split in two, while the Downy’s is not!
