I can't believe it's been more than half a year since I last posted a picture from the steel mill 'Ferrum' in Katowice. It is a relatively interesting place with a uniquely painted inudstrial engine.

The steelworks are laid out in a weird way, because the area of the entire facility is cut right in half by a public street. This requires an additional bit of fencing and gates, but also allows us, railway enthusiasts, to take a peak into the industrial railway of the steelworks. Each time a set of cargo wagons bound for the steelworks is brought into the station Katowice Zawodzie, the facility's one and only SM42 has to bring wagons one by one all the way to the 'Mostostal', located in the south. In doing so, it has to cross two gates, which guard the factory on two sides of Porcelanowa street. Earlier they were called gate 7 and 8, now it seems like the designations are removed.

The loco usually brings 2 wagons to Mostostal, waits for their unloading and returns with them back to Zawodzie, to then pick up the next set of cargo (I describe this logistics operation in my previous post). On this particular day, it wasn't the case and I was very lucky to be one of the very few people to catch a light engine run in this place, which otherwise can only be photographed from the other side (with only one possible frame, that every single person has already utilised).

Thus I can proudly present this shot of SM42-2616 returning as light engine from Mostostal back to the steel mill's main area to pick up another set of cargo. Taking the picture required a relatively long waiting game, because the crew decided that they don't want to hang around in the heavy rain and waited for the atmospheric conditions to get better before continuing their shunting operations.
