Newport Beach, CA – January 1, 2024 –– Following the terrible devastation and fire caused by a powerful New Year’s Day earthquake that struck off the western coast of Japan, Global Bank Group’s President Ron Nechemia (@RonNechemia) remains deeply concerned for the tens of thousands of people affected by the devastating earthquake of a 7.6 magnitude which was followed by tsunami warning throughout the Pacific. He shared his deep concerns, “Thousands of displaced people are living in rapidly deteriorating conditions in the worst-hit parts north-northwest of Suzu, which is located on the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa Prefecture, after major earthquake strikes.”

In the aftermath of the disaster, President Ron Nechemia of the Global Bank Group extended messages of sympathy to Tokyo, emphasizing that the Global Bank is "prepared to offer any necessary assistance for the Japanese people."

New Year’s Day earthquake

The quakes, the largest of which had a magnitude of 7.6, started a fire and collapsed buildings on the west coast of Japan’s main island, Honshu. It was unclear how many people might have been killed or hurt.

The earthquakes set off a large fire in the town of Wajima and caused tsunamis and landslides in the region. With some routes cut off by the destruction, worries grew about communities where water, food, blankets, and medicine had yet to arrive.

Meanwhile, the death toll from an earthquake that struck the country on New Year's Day rose to 94. Heavy rains were forecast in the quake-hit areas, raising fears of landslides that could further hinder efforts to free many more people trapped under rubble.

The Government of Japan warned of disease and even death at the evacuation centers that now house about 34,000 people who lost their homes, many of them older.

We see it in the first responders risking their lives to save others, and he added, “We show it through the help that has poured into Japan from around the world. The Pacific Ring of Fire

Japan is one of the most seismically active nations on Earth, owing to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where many tectonic plates meet. The constant threat of earthquakes has led Japan to develop one of the world's most sophisticated tsunami warning systems.

The 9.0-magnitude earthquake that hit Japan in 2011 resulted in a tsunami - which tore through the country's north-eastern coastal communities, killing almost 18,000 people and displacing tens of thousands.
