Dealing with heat (Buffy Fish Owl | Sunda-Fischuhu | Kétoupa Malais)

            Birds don’t have any sweat glands, so they have to deal with heat in a different way than us humans.  Often we can see birds having their beaks open during warm days - and that is indeed how they cool down: they pant and through evaporation in their beaks, they get rid of heat.  For Buffy fish owls (Ketupa ketupu), we could think they could also regulate heat by “going swimming” when they prey for food, but in fact they never get more than their feet wet.  As other birds, the Buffy also pants and with a larger throat section visible expanding and contracting, they quickly move air through their open beaks.  In the picture you can see this in the blurry section of its throat, which was moving quickly, and at 1/20th of a second of exposure didn’t give a sharp image.
