Fine Art View From Below Ashness Bridge Towards 'Bark House Mountain Base' Bothy, Keswick, Lake District National Park, Cumbria

            Ashness Bridge is a Grade II listed traditional stone-built bridge carrying the single-track road across Barrow Beck, from the Borrowdale road (B5289) to Watendlath, in the English Lake District. It has been described as the most photographed bridge in the Lake District and it is easy to see why. It is famous for being a fine viewpoint across Borrowdale towards Skiddaw. It, or its predecessor, may have been a packhorse bridge conveying packhorse traffic from Watendlath to Keswick.

The bridge dates from the 18th century when many good were transported on the back of horses. The parapet was added in the 19th century and it was widened to allow cars to cross in the 20th century. It is built from slate rubble and is a narrow, single span (one horse wide), hump back bridge. The parapet is kept deliberately low to avoid it interfering with the panniers that the packhorse carried on their flanks.

Above the bridge an old barn or cottage, used for many years as a bothy for a climbing club. Little is known of the "Bark House Mountain Base 1964". A slate plaque adorns the end wall but there's no signs of recent activity.
