Wahweap Hoodoos, Utah -- Tower of Silence

            This morning, we got up early and drove about twenty miles from Page, Arizona to a place called Big Water. From there, we traveled on a rough dirt road for a few miles and then through a creek to get to the trailhead for the Wahweap Hoodoos.

A hoodoo (also called a tent rock, fairy chimney, and earth pyramid) is a tall, thin spire of rock that protrudes from the bottom of an arid drainage basin or badland. Hoodoos, which can range from 5-150 feet tall (1.5-45 meters), typically consist of relatively soft rock topped by harder, less easily eroded stone that protects each column from the elements. They generally form within sedimentary rock and volcanic rock formations.

The hoodoo pictured, has to be at least 40 feet (12+ meters) tall! What a great place to be taking photographs of these wonderful formations!

This particular location is reached by walking about 4.5 miles up a wash -- usually dry during the summer, but wet and muddy when we hiked it. To get the best light on these spires, we should have gotten there just after sunrise, but we got there around 10:30 am, and had to deal with uneven sunlight. 

All in all, we had a great day, and Walter, John, and I were impressed with the awesomeness of these geological features.
