Water Holes Slot Canyon, Page, Arizona

            Water Holes Slot Canyon (located on Navajo Tribal land) is a place I've wanted to visit since I first saw images of it on flickr a couple of years ago. 

A slot canyon is a narrow canyon formed by the wear of water rushing over and through rock. It is significantly deeper than it is wide. Some slot canyons can measure less than 3 feet (1 meter) across at the top but drop more than 100 feet (~30 meters) to the floor of the canyon. 

Walter, John, and I had visited the more famous Antelope Canyons (Upper and Lower) in November, 2008. We bought the photographers permit, which entitled us an extra amount of time to spend inside taking photographs. Even so, it became quite crowded, and in order to get a shot without people that we didn't know, we had to wait until they moved ahead of us and out of sight. It was a 1.5 hour guided tour, and I would probably do it again on some subsequent visit.

However, since Water Holes Canyon is not as well known, we figured that we could spend as much time as we needed and without seeing those other pesky tourists. In addition, the Water Holes Canyon day-use permit (unguided visit) cost us only $5 each for an unlimited time, while the Antelope Canyon permit for photographers cost about $46 each for just 1.5 hours. We saw only one other couple while we were there at Water Holes Canyon -- nice...

The color of the sandstone rock within Water Holes Canyon is significantly different from the color of the sandstone rock in the Antelope Canyons -- they are more of a gray to puple shade in the most narrow portions -- probably caused by less light filtering in from above. In places, the canyon narrows to just a couple of feet wide. Anyone with claustrophobia (the fear of having no escape and being closed in small spaces) should probably avoid visiting any of the slot canyons.
