Uvularia perfoliata (Perfoliate Bellwort) -- more below [Explore 2013-04-19]

The third location of this day trip is a place I've visited many times over the years -- Oconee Station State Historic Site in Oconee County, South Carolina. It is the home of an historic (late 1700s) trading post and military garrison on the "frontier" wildlands of South Carolina. It is also the home of a wonderful basic cove forest split by a trail that ends in front of Station Cove Falls.

On this day, I had explicitly visited to photograph the beautiful Trillium simile also called Gleason's Trillium or Sweet White Trillium. There has been a lot of discussion about whether this is, in fact, another species called Trillium erectum, but there are several subtle differences between the two which make it Trillium simile.

Along the way down the trail to the falls, I saw a number of Trllium catesbaei or Catesby's Trillium in full bloom. Several other spectacular wildflowers were also showing off at their best.
