The LEAGUE OF THE SACRED HEART is a Catholic Association established in 1844 and originally called the APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER. This league was affiliated with the Archconfraternity of the Heart of Jesus and its members were known as Associates. On joining, a new Associate would have received a personalised certificate (Certificate of Admission) and their name entered into the League’s Register. The official publication of the league was and continues to be the Messenger of the Sacred Heart, published since 1861.

The League also awarded “decorations” or medals for “devotions of virtue” and such virtues would have been defined by the type of work done by the Associate. The “virtues” were ranked and denoted by the colour of the medal’s silk ribbon. In order of importance from the lowest, the colours were (ref: p130 handbook): blue (devotion to Our Lady), purple (penance), violet (fidelity), red (charity), white (purity) and the highest being white & gold (the Pope).

The League’s badge was also available for purchase by anyone who presented their Certificate of Admission and the sale of badges were a useful source of income to cover running expenses. The need for a badge was not obligatory but wearing of the League’s badge was promoted as a “mark of faith and devotion”.

The Apostleship of Prayer was established by the Jesuits on the Feast of Saint Francis Xavier (3rd December 1844) at Vals, in France. Originally called the Apostleship of Prayer because the association “seeks to do the same thing as the Apostles – to promote the glory of God and the salvation of souls”. Associate membership was graded into three distinct ranks (1st, 2nd and 3rd Degrees) and varied according to type of work done, the 1st Degree level being common to all Associates. The statutes of the Apostleship of Prayer were revised in 2018 and it is now also known as The Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network.
