2009-08-24 Nieul-sur-l'Autise, Abbey-of-Saint-Vincent, Vendée, Pays de la Loire 02

            The abbey of Saint Vincent of Nieul-on-l'Autise was founded in 1068 by Ayraud Gadessenier, lord of Vouvant . She initially received a community of Canons Regular of St. Augustine belonging to the congregations of Génovéfains . They are responsible for cleaning up the Marais Poitevin .
Declared Royal Abbey in 1141 by King Louis VII , husband of Eleanor of Aquitaine from 1137, the complex was largely ruined by the wars of religion . It partly owes its preservation and restoration to Prosper Merimee impressed with what remained of the whole "Poitevin novel."
The church has two towers , one above the transept and the other above the portal, and the nave is majestic vaulted a powerful cradle reinforced arches on twin columns but, over time, they show a low slump.
The cloister novel has remained largely intact. The Romanesque bell tower is topped by one of the xix th  century , which strongly alter the silhouette of the original facade.
Mother of Eleanor of Aquitaine , AENOR Châtellerault , is buried.
