The facade of the church has several ossuaries and Roman sculptures, but she is best known for the portal in the famous white marble with lintel white marble, the oldest Romanesque sculpture dated.
Funerary inscriptions on the ossuaries indicate the graves of monks or people close to the abbey. Found including two tombstones representing the deceased lying idle.
This sculpture was not intended at its realization to be a lintel, it served to support altar, probably in the current church. This is the twelfth century that the work was placed above the door of the church. The presence of four ravens above indicates that the work was originally protected by a small roof against the weather.
It would have disappeared in the fifteenth or sixteenth century, since the work, and the rest of the portal has been coated with a kind of varnish to protect it, which gives it its yellowish appearance (although the marble is initially blank). The lintel of the Abbey of Saint-Genis is a historical monument. This lintel is of great interest for understanding the evolution of Romanesque art in Catalonia, because crossing the stylistic evolution works with other dating it is possible to establish a precise chronology of Romanesque sculpture. But the work also provides information on the evolution of the Abbey of Saint-Genis. And the arches represented on the lintel have gained confidence that the abbey had a cloister previous, probably Carolingian one known today (which dates from the thirteenth century and whose arches are semicircular).
Four kilometers east of Saint-Genis-des-Fontaines is the ancient abbey of Saint-André bringing over the portal of the church lintel very similar, but without writing, perhaps resulting from same sculptor, or a previous copy of the Saint-Genis.
