I often walked from Gravesend to Greenhithe, which I would be approaching when I took this. If I timed things right, I'd get the around this point around the time dusk began: it's my favourite spot for sunsets of the River Thames.
The chimney in the centre of the image is gone, along with the power station, Littlebrook, it belonged to.
As well as the bridge, there is a road traffic tunnel under the river, while the channel tunnel rail link tunnel emerges close by, on the Essex bank. Its entrance is closer to where I was, on the Kent bank.
