Mole Salamander (Ambystoma talpoideum)

The first stop for this day out in the field was a small oak swamp , where the water had been steadily receding from weeks without rain. As the sun broke through the tree cover, I found a log barely being hit by the sun half in and half out of the water. This large salamander was underneath on the dryer side of the log. It was fairly compliant for photos and was released after capture. Also observed was an amphiuma which was kicked out of a thick leaf pack in shallow water by a friend.
