CP 6222 leads a GP20ECo and a ex-SOO GP40 along with a loaded a Ballast Train around the curve and past a farm south of New Albin, Iowa on a fantastic spring afternoon. The 3800' train has both a GREX slot train on the head end and a cut of primarily ex-Milwaukee and ex-SOO ballast cars.

I was in the greater La Crosse area last Sunday, lamenting the lack of traffic on both the BNSF and CP, when a "Ballast Train" suddenly started talking to the Dispatcher as the CP 6222. Now that's worth checking out! Finding nothing resembling a work train in the CP yard, I trusted my gut and headed towards La Cescent, hoping the ballast train would be there and would be headed up the river to make for a afternoon chase. What I found was even better - it was a southbound for the Marquette sub! After about a half hour or so the ballast train finished it's shuffling, got a warrant south out of Bluff to Marquette, and the chase began. Back in the Iowa Chicago and Eastern days I spent a lot of time chasing the old MSPKC and MKCSP up and down this stretch of the river, which with all the curves, low track speed for easy chasing, and scenic spots, is one of my favorite stretches of railroad to chase. And with a consist like this, it was worth making that chase again! While it's not a trio of blue and gold EMDs, this trio of bright red EMDs against the bright greens of spring and the blue sky made for a heck of a fun afternoon. This shot was one that I always wanted when chasing in the ICE days, but never had a train at the right time of day for the light here. I finally can say I've crossed this one off the list!
