20 227 & 20 095 at Derby with 1M84. 1990.

            Working a "Sprinter DMU" substitute service 20 227 & 20 095 are seen at Derby having arrived with 1M84 the 11.50 ex Lincoln Central. At the time BR were experience a shortage of new diesel units as the older DMU stock was being withdrawn, it was not uncommon for a scratch set of coaches to be found and something "interesting" to haul them. A similar situation prevailed in the North-East during the late 1980's when the gearboxes started failing on the new 143 railcars and the previous class 101 DMU's had gone for scrap. Class 31's and 47's prevailed on stopping trains around the Durham Coast for a few months.
