David Kindersley - proposed road signs and typeface - comparison

            In the mid-1950s, when work was being undertaken on the potential re-design of the UK's road traffic signs, David Kindersley, a known sculptor, letter engraver and typeface designer, contributed a form of seriffed letters for consideration. His work was not taken up and in time the now famous Transport typeface by Calvert and Jock Kinneir, designed between 1957 and 1963, was chosen. I think it is fair to say, from what I have read about Kindersley's reaction to the final san-serif forms chosen, that he was not very happy about it! Some of his work was used for local street name signs in Cambridge, the city he was for many years based in. 

This shows a comparison between his proposed and personally preferred version using capitals and the early proposals of the Calvert & Kinneir designs used on UK roads.
