Re-opening of the City & South London Railway, 1 December 1926 : diagram of the works & associated lines

            From the booklet issued to commemorate the re-opening of the City & South London Railway and the associated works that would see it joined to the Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway at both Kennington and Camden Town that, along with extensions north to Edgware and south to Morden, would be completed in 1926. In 1938 the line eventually gained its modern nomenclature of the Northern line.

This diagram or version of the tube map is by the designer who produced most of the card and small versions of the map at the time - F H Stingemore. It uses a stripped back and simplified geographical layout of the lines that the Beck diagram of 1933 would sweep away. This version highlights both the reconstructed City & South London Railway, the first section of which had opened as the world's first electric tube railway in 1890, and the "Hampstead Railway", the shortened name adopted for the Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway that had opened in 1907. Both had seen subsequent extensions and this diagram shows the works between Euston and camden Town as well as the extension south to Kennington that 'joined' the lines to creat the Charing Cross and City branch.

Other LER group lines are shown but omitting the District and MDR or 'Circle' lines. The diagram also shows some of the station reconstructions, that accompanied the works, as yet to be completed after December 1924 as well as the Morden extension that had opened, along with the Kennington Loop, on 13 September 1926. The extension shows the intended names of two stations at Nightingale Lane and Trinity Road.
