London - Municipal : Philips' Handy Administrative Atlas : England & Wales : George Philip & Son Ltd : London : 1928 [amended to c.1931]

            A fine small volume, the Philips Handy Administrative Atlas to England & Wales lists all counties and shows various administrative boundaries; these include the then county boroughs, municipal boroughs, urban district councils and rural district councils. The maps also show "Assessment Areas" as instituted under the Rating & Valuation Act of 1925. The information as to extent and population is also shown in tabular form. This mentions the 1931 Census.

The system of local government shown here would remain largely unchanged until alterations within conurbations in the mid-1960s, along with London reorganisation in 1965, and then the huge changes following the Redcliffe-Maud Commission in the 1970s that were delivered in 1974. There was at the time of publication the deliberations of the 1925 Royal Commission that rather came to naught, as well as changes in the powers, responsibilities and relationships between existing local authorities  following the Local Government Act of 1929 and other ad-hoc changes were made over time most notably the 'promotion' of various Urban Districts to Municipal Boroughs in the 1930s as population growth and changes took place.

This map shows the 28 London Metropolitan Boroughs that sat under the jurisdiction of the London County Council as set up in 1900. They were swept away, except for the City of London, in the 1965 changes that set up London Boroughs under the Greater London Council.
