The District Railway, or rather Metropolitan District Railway, was the second company to undertake construction and operation of an Underground railway in London; its largely sub-surface lines eventually helped weld the Metropolitan Railway into what was to become the Circle line. The company was formed in 1864 and began services in 1870 and over time its lines and services grew to serve areas in the west of London as well as starting to edge towards the east.

By 1901 the District was coming under some pressure from the first of the new deep tube electrically operated railways that can be seen on this map; The City & South London Railway of 1890 and the Central London Railway of 1900. The desire to electrify the District saw action from the American financier C. T. Yerkes who took control of the District as well as building the major power generating station at Lots Rd, Chelsea, and the combination of tube line schemes that in 1906/07 would form the Underground Electric Railways of London. Given these do not appear on the map, and the First Edition of this map is from 1902, I'd say that c.1905 is a likely date for this flat sheet version of the 'timetable' map. There could be other clues if you start to study the wider railway network shown.

Not easy to photograph I have included a more close-up image of central London. The District produced for many years a range of similar maps that appeared folded, in timetables, as well as in card covers or flat.
