Souvenir of the Official Opening of Immingham Dock by His Majesty The KIng : July 22nd. 1912 : Great Central Railway : 1912 : Fortunino Matania

            An absolutely glorious brochure, printed to perfection by Knapp, Drewitt & Sons of London, to commemorate the official opening of Immingham Dock by H. M. King George V on 22 July 1912. It contains numerous colour plates and plans, including an immense fold out birds-eye view of the docks and associated railway connections of the Great Central Railway's massive investment in an East Coast deep water port.

The GCR was, of course, in many ways the 'new kid on the block'. Immingham fulfilled the intention of the original company from which the Great Central sprang - the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway that had its origins in 1845. It changed its name in 1897 prior to the opening of what has been billed the 'last main line in England', the superbly engineered route from Sheffield and the North to London Marylebone that opened in 1899 with the intention of bringing competition to the other main lines including the London & North Western, the Midland and the Great Northern. The line was, as famously, one of the major closures of the contraction of Briitsh Rail in the 1960s. The port of Immingham gave them an outlet for coal exports as well as for inward imports.

The cover as are the colour plates, is by the noted Fortunino Matania (1881 - 1963) the Italian artist who spent much of his working life in the UK. He undertook many luscious magazine illustrations for the 'glosses' of the day and was also commissioned by the London MIdland & Scottish Railway after their formation in 1923 for posters for Southport and Blackpool. Oddly, despite being seen as quite 'old fashioned' in comparison with the modern designers, this pair of posters that paint both Lancashire seaside towns with fashionable excess are immensely collectable! Several of the plates in this brochure were used as the basis of posters by the Great Central. The cover shows the angel of commerce harnessing the ships of the sea and bestowing via the horn of plenty the financial rewards upon the GCR.
