British Railways Modernisation : Liverpool - Crewe Electrification : British Railways, London Midland Region : nd [c.1962] : title page

            The electrification of the railway between Crewe and Liverpool formed the second stage of the modernisation of the lines between that city, Manchester, Crewe and London Euston that formed part of the 1955 Modernisation Plan of British Railways. The Manchester - Crewe section had been completed in 1960; this phase completed in 1962 and the works then began on the Crewe to London, via both the Trent Valley and West Midlands lines, and came into use in stages between 1965 and 1967.

This booklet thoroughly describes the work required and this was extensive. As well as the overhead and electrical supplies much infrastructure work was required on tunnels and bridges for clearance and the opportunity was taken to renew various track layouts and junctions. New colour light signalling was installed and new depots for both the new 25kv AC locomotives and multiple units were required. 

The cover to the booklet is by that doyen of transport scraperboard illustration A.N. Wolstenholme who was commissioned by British Railways, Ian Allan and other companies for such work. It shows a new AM class electrical multiple units alongside one of the AL class locmotives constructed for the modernisation. The booklet also has a folding plan showing the typical construction layout of what was the new standard for BR electrification at 25kv AC that had been decided upon in preference to the previous 1500v DC standard in the mid-1950s.
